Richter Fine Art | Alexander Wertheim "Brandenburg Paintings"

La Galleria Richter Fine Art apre la nuova stagione espositiva con la prima personale in Italia di Alexander Wertheim (Wertheim, Germania, 1995) intitolata Brandenburg Paintings, accompagnata da un testo critico di Maria Vittoria Pinotti. Il progetto verrà inaugurato martedì 23 settembre 2025 dalle 18.30 e sarà visitabile fino al 7 novembre 2025. Realizzate nella città di Brandeburgo nei mesi precedenti sono esemplificative dell’attuale stato della ricerca dell’artista in continua fase di cambiamento. Tutte le opere in mostra, realizzate con colori acrilici su tela e pennello, sono caratterizzate da una radicale ed efficace semplificazione formale del linguaggio pittorico.

Quello di Wertheim è un atto pittorico estremamente riduttivista sia per la scelta di trattare in maniera seriale l’immagine della griglia - elemento per eccellenza che nella storia della cultura universale ha inteso ordinare e organizzare – che per uno sviluppo attraverso una pratica rudimentale, estremamente stilizzata che ricorda la semplificazione formale delle pitture rupestri. Questa estrema riduzione si riflette anche nel titolo della mostra, in quanto l’unico elemento utile all’artista per saper distinguere e orientare la propria ricerca è il luogo di creazione dei dipinti.

Sebbene la pittura contemporanea sia fortemente caratterizzata, spesso ossessionata dalla necessaria presenza di elementi figurativi, Alexander Wertheim mira a riflettere sul valore fisico e visivo della tela bianca. Il supporto è appena tracciato da segni verticali e orizzontali in modo apparentemente incerto, formando una griglia e trasmettendo una pacata e oscillante frenesia.

Nonostante l’intera ricerca dell’artista si concentri attorno all'assenza e la sola presenza di un elemento semi-geometrico, sono diverse le domande che Wertheim intende sollevare: Che cos’è un quadro? Quali sono i limiti del linguaggio pittorico? Quanto è risolutiva l’incertezza, per la riuscita di un’opera? Che valore ha la superficie neutra e bianca della tela o della carta? Queste sono tutte questioni che Wertheim esplora, ma lascia lo spettatore libero e autonomo di formulare le proprie risposte, allontanandosi da qualsiasi interpretazione imposta.

Nata da una apparente combinazione di forme gestuali, la griglia è per Wertheim, motivo e stimolo di una ricerca sviluppata in serie. Sebbene si concentri su questo unico soggetto, l’imprevedibilità della tecnica pittorica gli permette di acquisire una incessante diversità. Le linee o barre incrociate sono tracciate in modo libero e gestuale, perciò ogni opera sarà diversa dalle precedenti e le successive. Inoltre, la scelta dei colori è totalmente spontanea: trae ispirazione da tonalità che rimangono in memoria e che vengono accostate senza una logica associativa ma attraverso innumerevoli tentativi. La saturazione di ogni tono dipende dall'intensità specifica della materia, a volte più o meno densa, e dalla vicinanza con cui viene applicata sulla tela. Ne risulta una variazione cromatica che crea un'affascinante tensione sulla superficie.

Nel testo critico Maria Vittoria Pinotti afferma «C’è stato un momento in cui i pittori si tormentavano nella ricerca spasmodica di un tema, inteso come verifica della realtà. Oggi c’è chi, con coerenza, lucidità e senza alcuna pretesa, concentra un’intera ricerca sulla semplificazione di un unico soggetto. Le pitture di Alexander Wertheim sono frutto di un’esecuzione tanto riflessiva quanto intuitiva, in cui l’artista lavora forma e toni come fossero i tasti di una tastiera infinita che suona senza attenersi ad alcuna regola, tracciando un’ossatura piuttosto che una griglia. Si possono considerare come lo studio di una dimensione che occupa e insinua lo spazio, senza chiuderne del tutto i vuoti ma orientandoli con delicatezza, fino a costituire un sistema di corrispondenze imperfette: tracce che si sovrappongono, ripetizioni mai identiche, sviluppate secondo la traiettoria apparentemente incerta e vacillante del pennello».

La mostra Brandenburg Paintings di Alexander Wertheim verrà inaugurata in concomitanza con l’opening della personale dedicata a Carlo Battaglia Oceania, alla galleria EDDart in Via di Monte Giordano 36.

Richter Fine Art opens the new exhibition season with the first solo exhibition in Italy by Alexander Wertheim (Wertheim, Germany, 1995), titled Brandenburg Paintings, accompanied by a critical text by Maria Vittoria Pinotti. The project will be inaugurated on Tuesday, 23 September 2025, from 6:30 pm, and will be on view until 7 November 2025. Created in the city of Brandenburg in the preceding months, the works are representative of the artist’s current research, in a constant process of evolution. All the exhibited works, made with acrylic paint on canvas using a brush, are characterized by a radical and effective formal simplification of the painterly language.

Wertheim’s painting is an extremely reductionist act—both in the choice to serially treat the image of the grid (an element that, throughout universal culture, has served to order and organize), and in the development through a rudimentary, highly stylized practice reminiscent of the formal simplification of cave painting. This extreme reduction is even reflected in the exhibition’s title, since the only useful element for the artist to distinguish and orient his research is the place of creation of the paintings.

Although contemporary painting is often dominated—sometimes obsessed—with the necessary presence of figurative elements, Alexander Wertheim aims to reflect on the physical and visual value of the white canvas. The support is only lightly traced by vertical and horizontal marks, seemingly uncertain, forming a grid and conveying a calm yet oscillating frenzy.

Despite the artist’s entire investigation focusing on absence and the sole presence of a semi-geometric element, Wertheim intends to raise several questions: What is a painting? What are the limits of painterly language? How decisive is uncertainty in the success of a work? What value does the neutral, white surface of the canvas or paper hold? These are all questions Wertheim explores, yet he leaves the viewer free and autonomous to formulate their own answers, moving away from any imposed interpretation.

Born from an apparent combination of gestural forms, the grid is, for Wertheim, both the purpose and stimulus of a serially developed inquiry. Although he concentrates on this single subject, the unpredictability of the painting technique allows him to achieve incessant diversity. The intersecting lines or bars are drawn freely and gesturally, so each work differs from the previous and the following. Moreover, the choice of colors is entirely spontaneous: it draws inspiration from hues that linger in memory and are combined without any associative logic but through countless attempts. The saturation of each tone depends on the specific intensity of the medium—sometimes denser, sometimes looser—and on the proximity with which it is applied to the canvas. The result is a chromatic variation that generates an enthralling tension on the surface.

In the critical text, Maria Vittoria Pinotti states: «There was a time when painters agonized over the obsessive search for a subject, understood to verify reality. Today, there are those who, with coherence, clarity, and without any pretense, focus an entire practice on the simplification of a single subject. Alexander Wertheim’s paintings are the result of a process that is as reflective as it is intuitive, in which the artist works with forms and tones as if they were the keys of an infinite keyboard - one that plays without following any rules, sketching a structure rather than a grid. His works can be seen as a study of a dimension that inhabits and infiltrates space, without fully closing its voids but gently guiding them, eventually forming a system of imperfect correspondences: overlapping traces, never identical repetitions, developed along the seemingly uncertain and wavering trajectory of the brush».

The exhibition Brandenburg Paintings by Alexander Wertheim will be inaugurated in conjunction with the opening of the solo show dedicated to Carlo Battaglia, Oceania, at the EDDart gallery on Via di Monte Giordano 36.
